The House Energy and Commerce’s oversight subcommittee “will examine whether Toyota and NHTSA have taken adequate steps since the February hearing to investigate and understand the role of electronics in sudden unintended acceleration,” according to a three-page memorandum to staffers today obtained by The Detroit News. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W 198) production “Gullwing” model was clearly a close relation of these racing vehicles, since it took the engineers just one-and-a-half years to create the new design on the basis of the W 194 racing sports car. U.S. News Rankings & Reviews: NHTSA Investigates Ford Windstar and Chevy Corvette
Both investigations are in the preliminary stages. If NHTSA finds cause, both can result in a safety recall. Ford discontinued the Windstar in 2007, but will replace rear axles free of charge in the event of a safety recall. However, USA Today notes, “NHTSA seldom orders a recall. Either an investigation shows one is not warranted, or the automaker voluntarily recalls the vehicles.” NHTSA is also investigating the Chevrolet Corvette after receiving 30 complaints from consumers about leaky fuel tanks. Market Watch: Green Auto Electric SUVs Arrive in USA
According to an article in Automotive News, Nissan Motor Company has booked 3,754 pre-orders for its Leaf Electric Vehicle in Japan — or more than half its first-year sales target there — in just three weeks, the automaker said. In the United States, the car has a $32,780 sticker price, but a $7,500 federal tax credit lowers that to $25,280. Nissan also announced over 100,000 people on a wait list, with 25,000 units pre-sold prior to Dec 2010 launch. Full Story…
