Ford has announced profits during the first quarter, on the heels of General Motors announcing a (mildly controversial) payback of government loans and Chrysler’s new parent company’s talk of bringing its own small car to the market. Not seen since the early 1980s, the Fiesta nameplate is Ford’s answer to the Chevrolet Aveo, Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris. Speed TV: April Auto Sales Up 20 Percent
Volkswagen rose 39 percent, Nissan was up 35 percent and Toyota rose 24 percent, its negative publicity over unintended acceleration mitigated by generous buyer incentives. Hyundai-Kia also continued its rise, with a 24 percent increase. Daimler was also up, with a 19 percent gain, and BMW scored a nine percent increase in sales. Mazda was up 17 percent, and Honda rose 13 percent. Jaguar-Land Rover had an increase of 10 percent. The only automakers showing a downturn for April were niche players Porsche, with a six percent reduction, and Suzuki, down 23 percent. Full Story…

Inside Line: 2010 Beijing Auto Show – Color It Green
Multinational auto giants, from Nissan to Volkswagen, used the Beijing show as a pulpit to spread the green gospel. The VW group displayed the Audi A8 hybrid and A1 E-tron, as well as a battery-powered edition of the China-designed VW Lavida sedan, and said it planned to market several locally produced EVs in China by 2013. Nissan trotted out its Leaf EV and said it will go on sale in China in early 2011. General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Volt MPV5 concept and said the Volt sedan would be released in China in 2011.
