Kia first introduced the Sportage in 1993 as a new type of SUV, promoting it as an SUV in the style of a sedan. The name came from the words “sports” and “portage.” A prototype of the SUV was first unveiled as the NB-7 in the Tokyo International Motor Show in 1991. The NB-7 was equipped with a 2,000 cubic centimeter gasoline engine as well as a 2,200 cubic centimeter diesel engine. It sold for 11.9 million won ($9,950) to 12.9 million won. USA Today: Volvo’s Intruder Heartbeat Detector Option Going Bye-Bye
The intruder detector was aimed to burnish the Swedish automaker’s reputation as a safety leader and to buttress appeal with female buyers. It first appeared on the 2007 S80, Volvo’s flagship sedan, and has been offered since on all models except S40, V50 and C30. USA Today: Mitsubishi i-MiEV Electric Car is Spunky, Fun and Promising
The car’s been on sale in Japan since summer 2009 and goes on sale in Europe this summer. Mitsu forecasts the U.S. price at a bit less than $30,000 before any government incentives, such as the federal tax credit of $7,500 and four-figure sweeteners in some states.
